Girlfriends: Where would we be without them?
I recently met some friends I hadn’t seen in forever for dinner. We drank, we laughed, we listened, and we gave each other advice. It was almost therapeutic meeting with them and much needed. The next day we all felt “rejuvenated”. You NEED those nights out with your gal pals. You can get lost in the day to day hustle and bustle and can’t forget that one of the best parts of life is the relationships you have. Not just the one with your spouse, kids, family… but your girlfriends.
It is funny to think that this whole idea of a holiday got started on a Parks and Rec episode about 10 years ago. I mean, who wouldn’t want to celebrate friendships!?
Personally, I don't know where I would be without my girlfriends. They are a huge part of my life. There is saying that goes to surround yourself with people that encourage and inspire positive change in your life. I mean, last night my good friend was trying to hold me accountable to my eating healthy goal. I had to confess I had four Red Lobster cheese biscuits and a hot dog for dinner. (You know those biscuits are amazing people!) Or my sister who has been working out for a week and is now all Jillian Michaels on me about it. My other good friend who tells me when I am being cray cray and to come back down to earth when need be. My other friend who is the one I have laughed my butt off since I was 8 because laughter is therapeutic. All in all; friendships are so important in life and I cherish each one.
SO where am I going with all this? Well next week is Galentine's Day! Market on Oak is having our first ever:

Christmas is only a week away. Let me repeat that… A.WEEK! When did that happen? Are you prepared? Made your list and checked it twice? For many of us the holidays can get chaotic. Fortunately, Market on Oak is here for some tips!
Caffeine does wonders. It gives you that extra fuel to get your day started! Wrapping presents, finishing (or starting!?) your Christmas shopping, working, watching your kids, hosting family, going out of town, ETC. Whatever it is, coffee is great! So next week you can run on Christmas Spirit…or Coffee…. I have a feeling for a lot of us it might be the latter! ;)
2) Festive Wear
I am a planner. Already I have in mind what my daughter will be wearing for our family Christmas get together. If you want to make sure you look festive, plan and buy ahead! We have great accessories and clothing options here at the store. A necklace can jazz up any outfit! Earrings can make a great statement and we have several dressier tops that are warm and fashionable.
3) Mentally Prepare
Let’s be real, holidays can get chaotic. You are running on caffeine, might be low on sleep and have a big to do list. Not only that but for many you will be around family. Or fighting your way through a retail store to get the hottest toy. Listening to your Aunt Jane talk on and on and on… and on… and on… Or putting up with that one uncle who might drink a little too much… listening to the same story that you’ve heard year after year… ETC! I know you know what I am talking about! Prepare yourselves people! We have some great signs that I am sure you will be able to relate to. ;)

Okay, how can you NOT love fall? It isn’t ridiculously cold or ridiculously hot. It is the perfect temperature matched with gorgeous views of the trees changing color. It is sipping a hot coffee in my cozy house while I watch my normally laid back husband outside obsess about the leaves that land on our lawn. “Oh my gosh, did you hear that gust of wind!” (as the lawn gets covered again) For a season I know he can relate to how I feel about doing laundry. You feel so accomplished when it is all done and then bam, nope! Another load to do or more leaves to rake!
Now that our daughter is almost two it is even more fun watching her play in the piles of leaves. Being pregnant the temperature change is AH-mazing. No more getting out of breath walking to my car just from the heat. Now I get out of breath after I eat too much Apple Crisp or Caramel Apples because there is physically no room in my stomach but I have no self control. Truth is: fall is my favorite season of the year!
Another thing I love about fall? The smells, change in wardrobe (hello forgiving cozy tops and leggings), and accessories. Market on Oak has gotten a ton of new products in for the season! I am going to share some of my favorites with you.
I remember feeling so cool when I was little because I had a hat that looked like Dr. Suess and even one that looked like something a joker would wear. I mean, how “cool” right!? Well I am REALLY glad my fashion sense has changed. It doesn’t take a fashionista though to realize how adorable these hats and headbands are. Some of them even have an opening for a pony tail. (genius) Pair them with a cute coat or sweatshirt and you are set!
My absolute favorite accessory in the fall and winter is a nice scarf. They are functional and cute and add a lot to any outfit! Need a pop of color? Just add a scarf! Need to give someone a gift for their upcoming birthday? Can’t go wrong with a scarf! (Especially a black and white plaid infinity one that is on the top left row * cough cough *hint hint to my husband)
So there are basic necessities in life. A roof over our heads, food on our tables, AND a burning fall candle when the temperatures drop. I mean… not really but you get my point! I LOVE burning a nice soy all natural candle that reminds me of the season change. Fortunately we have some options for you. Are you more of a Roasted Pumpkin Seed aroma, Simmered Cider or a nice Copper Clove scent? Let me tell you, they ALL smell great.

It is hard to believe, but summer is winding down! Didn’t we just have those snowstorms?! Oh wait… that was back in April? It feels like last week! Business has been great and this has been a great summer working at Market on Oak. It definitely beats sitting in a cubicle all day. Yet you can take the girl out of the corporate world, but sometimes you can’t take the corporate world out of the girl. I LOVE looking at reports. I was curious, what were you people buying all summer? I decided to do some digging in our system and found some of our most popular items of the summer. One thing is for sure, they are all great!

If there is one thing that is evident, there are a lot of campers in our area! These hats have been flying off the shelves. Women have been buying them for themselves and their friends to match. We had to reorder within one week of receiving these in. With a distressed look, fun colors… who wouldn’t be a happy camper wearing this hat?
All Natural DeBug Spray
Speaking of camping.. Bugs are known to make people UNhappy campers. Good thing we have you covered! Okay, I can vouch for this product. It.works! Plus I feel great about not dousing myself or my family in a chemical spray. This has a lemony smell that is also better than your regular bug spray smell and is just as effective! We have all taken tests on it. We have all studied about it. But how much do we REALLY remember about our U.S History we learned about in school? Not going to lie, I had to do some brushing up on my history to feel confident to write this post! I mean, when was the last time you thought about the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence. What is the Preamble? Tisk Tisk... What is the Declaration of Independence? Okay..GIT! Hopefully you didn't just think that.

We celebrate the 4th of July as THE day where we decided to cut away from the Brits across the pond. We declared our independence. The main points of the Declaration of Independence are:

It has been 12 years since I graduated high school. The year was 2006. I drove a Volkswagen Passat and blared anything ranging from Sublime, Gorillaz to Beyonce and Fergie. And you cannot forget Gwen Stefani’s, "Hollaback Girl". I had splurged on a really cool CD deck and I would take it out and store it in my glove box when I left my car anywhere in case anyone would steal it. I mean… It had computer GRAPHICS on it people.
A lot has changed since then. Let’s start with the obvious.
Phones and technology:
I had one friend who was obsessed with texting. She was so fast, but fortunately for her we had T9Word back then to speed things up for us and our thumbs! And wow, you can get the internet on your phone? I remember thinking “Why would anyone need that? We have computers to print out our Mapquest directions. Duh”. Nowadays, our phones have become intertwined in our lives. Much of school is done online. IPADS and smart boards are just part of the normal curriculum nowadays. Even much of grading is done online now. Goodbye scantron sheets.
This is something I literally can not imagine what it is like growing up with. For me to know what anyone was up to, I would have to physically call their house phone or their cell if they were lucky enough to have one. I remember it was end of Senior year and I was sitting in the media center when a girl next to me was showing me this new website called Facebook. I thought it was so cool you could tag people in photos! Fast forward to now and you have Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, Insta and even finstas. No more calling your friends to see what they are up to. Just check that device that fits in the palm of your hand.
One thing that hasn’t changed for graduates though is what an exciting time this is in their lives. It is the beginning of a new chapter. If I could give my 18 year old self some advice; it would be this…
My first semester at college I failed my first Calculus test. I was an A student in high school. I balled my eyes out. The thing is: it doesn’t matter! Just relax! Everything will work out and be just fine. More than fine actually! This goes for much much more than just a small tiny test in school but life in general.
People are going to come and go out of your life. It might be disappointing sometimes but that is just a part of it. You are going to find out who your real friends are and who you actually want in your life. So many new friends and memories will be made. It is also still great to get together with the people who have known me since my butterfly clip and overall-wearing days though! You will also find some friendships never change.
In general, the below sign sums up how you should strive to live your life. All you can do is your best. Being happy also comes with not comparing yourself to others. So don’t believe that Instagram account! Sometimes it is all a facade. And really… who cares!? You.do.you!
So for all the graduates out there.... Congratulations!
And in this next chapter of life; Remember..
I may be a little biased, but Minnesota has to be one of the best states to live and grow up in. Yes, we have mosquitos but thank God for bug spray. Yes, we have humidity in the summers but thank god for endless lakes and hairspray. And yes, some of us get made fun of for our thick accents. “Oh ya?” “Uhm Ya, don’t.care.”
First off, we have great exotic cuisine. My husband recently had a coworker over for dinner from California who was just craving Tatertot Hotdish. Even if you are the type of person that would find it fitting to have this sign in your kitchen...
ANYONE can make this meal. But he didn’t know that… It was this special thing in his mind. If you really want to look the part, you can buy an adorable apron at Market on Oak. Don’t want that Cream of Mushroom to splatter all over ya! So Being the sub-par cook that I am, I threw the really difficult complicated ingredients together and popped it in the oven. And “Oh.my.gawd! This is amazing stuff!” You would think I was Rachel Ray by his reaction.
Land of 10,000 Lakes. Need I say more!? I grew up in a town where life revolved around a lake like many Minnesotans. Growing up was spent with walking to the beach, getting picked up at my neighbor’s docks to go out on friends’ boats and attempting to be a cool wakeboard chick. Keyword: Attempt. The lakes are the major thing that define our state. We have more shoreline than California, Florida and Hawaii combined. Also, did you know there is one boat for every six people in our state?
With the lakes, comes our numerous cabins. There is just something about the whole up north vibe. We have so many great destination spots about an hour out of the twin cities. The pine trees, lakes, bluffs, waterfalls, etc! Northern Minnesota is so beautiful and a perfect way to spend any weekend!
In 2011 the “Surly Bill” was passed here that allowed breweries to sell their craft brews on site. It has been seven years and MN is now the No. 10 Craft Brewing State in the nation. We have a lot of good local craft beers. Surly in Minneapolis is a fun spot to hang on a Friday night next to a bonfire outside, or take a tour at Summit in St. Paul or drive to downtown Lakeville to their brewery. Your options are pretty much endless with breweries popping up in a lot of towns!
These are just a few reasons why Minnesota rocks. I will proudly wear any of our cute MN jewelry because I love our state..

There is a spot in our yard I have been staring at for two summers now. It is drab, can get full of weeds and is just an eye sore. Well this is the weekend folks! Gettin’ er done! Going to buy some mulch, attempt splitting some hosta without killing them and getting my green thumb on. Wish me luck, I am going to need it!
Working at Market on Oak, it is hard to not spend part of my paycheck here! The metal stars are super popular right now on people’s houses and I am eyeing one for myself as well! I have the perfect spot for it by my front door. Recently some customers came in from California asking about these and why so many people have them on their houses here. “What does it mean? What does it signify?” Uhm..cause they look nice!? I was curious and they are actually called Barnstars. They are meant to represent good luck! They increased in popularity after the Civil War and were popular in the Pennsylvania area and in Midwest German farming communities. Aka good ol’ Minne-SOH-tah. They have made a comeback though and are now being used on modern day houses as well. Thank you Joanna Gaines AND Market on Oak!
I think it is important to not only decorate the interior of your home to your liking, but also the outside. Give it some personality and taste! We have many items that would look great in any yard. We recently got in these glass flowers from a local artist made from old plates and bowls. They are so cool looking.
Fairy Gardens are always fun with the kiddos and we can help you with that as well.
Plus adding some cute signs on a shed is always a nice touch. People might think I am an actual gardener if I have a sign on my shed right?
Who doesn’t want to look at their yard and think.. dang it is cute out here! Or if you have been like me the past two years…. Ughhh I need to weed that…. ;)
